The book calls it The Tense Typist

My wrists and forearms are sore

Two stretches that look almost the same work different forearm muscles. Most people only ever do one. You need both.

Sounds like you?

“My forearms, wrists, and hands get sore from working on a computer all day.”

The free reset

Working on a computer all day can cause soreness in your forearms, wrists, and hands. To prevent or reduce stiffness and pain, try simple forearm stretches throughout the day.

3 minutes Forearm & Wrist Relief Routine

  1. Palm-down stretch

    1:00

Arm out, palm down. Bend the hand down and gently pull it toward you. 15 to 30 seconds each arm. Fingers tingle or go numb? Ease off.

  2. Palm-up stretch

    1:00

Arm out, palm up. Bend the hand down and gently pull it toward you. 15 to 30 seconds each arm. You’ll feel the underside.

  3. Wrist rotations

    1:00

Arms out, fists. Rotate outward, then inward. Gentle, never pain.

1 minute Quick Wrist Reset

Only have a minute? Do this one.

  1. Wrist circles

    0:30

Arms out, hands in fists. Rotate your wrists outward, then inward, for 30 seconds.

  2. Palm-down stretch

    0:30

One arm out, palm down. Bend the hand down and gently pull it toward you with the other hand. Hold 15 seconds, then the other side. Fingers tingle? Ease off.

How often

This combo is restorative, so you can safely do it two or three times a day: mid-morning, after lunch and before you finish work.

Little and often: four extra short breaks a day eased aches in one study. The book’s rule of thumb: consistency beats intensity. Aim for a two-minute Movement Snack every half hour.

Never into pain. Dizzy? Stop. Chest pain? Get emergency help. Fingers numb or tingling, or pain that wakes you? See a doctor.

Why sitting does this

In the book’s own words, from part 2, The Tense Typist.

Break the Stillness TrapPart 2, The Tense Typist

This routine provides a complete stretch for the muscles used in typing and mousing. It targets both the outer and inner parts of the forearm to prevent or reduce stiffness and pain.

When you’re stretching, keep it gentle. Breathe freely as you hold each stretch and be careful not to bounce. Expect to feel tension while you’re stretching. If you feel pain, you’ve gone too far.

What the studies found

What to expect: No reliable timeline from research yet, so go by how it feels. Not a promise: every body is different.

    Four extra 5-minute breaks

In a data-entry job, four extra 5-minute breaks a day eased aches and eyestrain, with no drop in output.

    The general stretching guide

Little research exists on wrist routines themselves, so the reset follows the general guide: gentle holds of 15 to 30 seconds, stop at pain.

When to see a doctor

Numb or tingling fingers, pain that is worse at night, or a weak grip should be checked by a doctor, not stretched.

  • Get emergency help now: chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting, a sudden severe headache, a face that droops, an arm that suddenly goes weak, slurred speech, or pain after a serious accident.
  • Back pain plus any of these? Get emergency help too: numbness around your genitals or bottom, new trouble peeing, wetting or soiling yourself, or numbness or weakness in both legs.
  • See a doctor today: one leg swollen, painful, warm, red or darker; a fever with the pain; or severe pain that is getting worse fast.
  • Book a doctor or physio: pain, tingling or weakness down one arm or leg, pain that wakes you, weight loss you can’t explain, pain after a fall, or no easing in 4 weeks.

General guidance, not medical advice. New injury or surgery, pregnant, or a heart condition? Ask your doctor before new exercise.
