The book calls it The Overheating Command Center

Stress sits in my head and shoulders

Stress lands in your neck and shoulders. Four slow movements let it go. The slowness is the point.

Sounds like you?

“My problem is more mental: I feel stressed, overwhelmed, and my head is full of “digital noise”.”
“Tension headaches are common for me, and my neck and shoulders get tight when I’m stressed.”

The free reset

Stress and screen time can leave you with a throbbing head and knotted neck: your command center is on overdrive. Brief relaxation exercises will cool it down by releasing muscle tension and calming your mind.

3 minutes Neck & Shoulder Tension Relief

  1. Neck tilts

    1:10

Drop your right ear toward your right shoulder, 10 seconds. Back to centre, then the left. 3 each side.

  2. Head turns

    0:30

Turn to look over your right shoulder, hold 10 seconds, then the left.

  3. Chin tuck and look up

    1:00

Tuck your chin, hold 10 seconds. Then look up only as far as is comfortable, 10 seconds. 2 or 3 times. Dizzy, or an arm tingles? Stop.

  4. Shoulder rolls

    0:20

Finish with 5 slow shoulder rolls.

1 minute Shoulder Roll and Breathe

Only have a minute? Do this one.

  1. Roll and breathe

Inhale deeply. Roll your shoulders in slow circles: 5 times forward, then 5 times back, breathing slowly. Finish with a big shrug, then let them drop.

How often

This combo is restorative, so you can safely do it two or three times a day: mid-morning, after lunch and before you finish work.

In one study, stretches twice a day eased neck and shoulder pain. The book’s rule of thumb: consistency beats intensity. Aim for a two-minute Movement Snack every half hour.

Never into pain. Move slowly and never force a neck stretch. Dizzy, or an arm tingles? Stop.

Why sitting does this

In the book’s own words, from chapter 1.6, Your Brain on Desk Life.

Break the Stillness TrapChapter 1.6, Your Brain on Desk Life

Have you ever felt like you have too many tabs open in your brain? A sense of digital exhaustion where focus is impossible and every new email feels like a burden? This is the feeling of an overheating command center.

Your brain, designed for periods of focus followed by physical movement and rest, is being asked to run at maximum capacity in a static state, bombarded by constant digital pings. It’s like running a powerful computer without a cooling fan. Eventually, it slows down, freezes, and risks a total burnout.

What the studies found

What to expect: Often calmer after a session. In one study, 5 minutes of breathing practice a day lifted mood over a month. Not a promise: every body is different.

  • Thailand · 2016 · 96 office workers with neck pain

    Twice a day

When to see a doctor

A sudden, severe headache, or one with a drooping face, slurred speech or a weak arm? Get emergency help now.

  • Get emergency help now: chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting, a sudden severe headache, a face that droops, an arm that suddenly goes weak, slurred speech, or pain after a serious accident.
  • Back pain plus any of these? Get emergency help too: numbness around your genitals or bottom, new trouble peeing, wetting or soiling yourself, or numbness or weakness in both legs.
  • See a doctor today: one leg swollen, painful, warm, red or darker; a fever with the pain; or severe pain that is getting worse fast.
  • Book a doctor or physio: pain, tingling or weakness down one arm or leg, pain that wakes you, weight loss you can’t explain, pain after a fall, or no easing in 4 weeks.

General guidance, not medical advice. New injury or surgery, pregnant, or a heart condition? Ask your doctor before new exercise.
